Autumn is said to be one of the most beautiful seasons to visit Kyoto. The vibrant autumn colors adds a magical touch to Kyoto’s traditional atmosphere making it a scene that should not be missed. One of the highlights of Kyoto’s autumn leaves viewing are the Illumination events that are often held at Kyoto’s well known temples at night.

Tofukuji Temple

Tofukuji Temple was built in 1236 and is one of the most important Rinzai Temples in Kyoto. On the temple grounds, you can find Japan’s oldest triple temple gate which is a national treasure. There is also a Zen temple-style toilet which is a national cultural artifact. Other than that, you will find a mighty dragon drawn on the ceiling of the main hall!

Other than that, the Honbo garden designated as a National Site of Scenic Beauty is a great attraction. Designed by Shigemori Mirei, a famous modern garden architect, the Hojo (one of the main buildings of the temple) boasts four gardens with designs that vary from the north, south, east, and west. The north garden is particularly famous for its unique checkered pattern of moss and stones!

The biggest highlight of Tofukuji Temple is the grand view of the autumn leaves that is seen from the Tsuten Bridge.

(Keihan Line, JR Line) Get off at Tofukuji Station and walk for 10 minutes

Bus
(From Kyoto Station) Take bus number 88 or 208, get off at Tofukuji Bus Stop and walk for 4 minutes
(From Shijo-Kawaramachi) Take bus number 207, get off at Tofukuji Bus Stop and walk for 4 minutes
(From Gion) Take bus number 202 or 207, get off at Tofukuji Bus Stop and walk for 4 minutes

🛑(The parking lot is closed during the event, please come by public transportation.)
