Did You Know This COVID19 Way Of Opening Japanese Convenience Store Rice Balls? (With Video)
Ah..The Japanese convenience store rice balls. The ONIGIRIS. The best grab-and-go food in the universe. What a mysterious and amazing invention.
The other day, my Japanese colleague taught me this smart, clean, and COVID19-free way of opening an onigiri and I was mind blown. 🤯 My life changed forever and things will never be the same. Did you guys know that there is a way to open the onigiris without having your dirty hands and fingers touch them!!?? If you did, kudos to you. But if you didn’t, take notes now!!
Before you try this advanced level, you might want to master the basics first.
The COVID19 Way Of Opening Japanese Convenience Store Rice Balls
Face the rice ball so that the front is facing you. On the top tip on the triangle, you will probably see the number ① written on it. Hold that number ① and start pulling it downwards carefully so that it rips beautifully.
Keep tearing that number ① until it comes down the whole way, then flip the rice ball to the back side. Once the backside of the rice ball is facing you, keep on tearing upwards until there is no longer any plastic covering the center part of the rice ball. It should look pretty much like the photo on the right. If not, you’ve probably messed up.
Now this is where things become advanced. Once again, face the front side of the rice ball towards you. On the right tip on the triangle, you will probably see a number ② written on it. Make sure you are holding the left side of your rice ball firmly with your left hand, then use your right hand to pull on the number ②. Pull upwards gently so that it removes with grace without tearing the seaweed. The plastic MUST fully detach once it gets to the top.
Flip the plastic so that the longer end is pointed to the left side. Gently push that plastic to cup the lower right tip of the onigiri.
On the left tip on the triangle, you will probably see a number ③ written on it. Make sure you are holding the right side of your rice ball firmly with your right hand, then use your left hand to pull on the number ③. Pull upwards gently so that it removes with grace without tearing the seaweed. Repeat step four on the left side by pointing the long end of the plastic to the right side. Gently push that plastic to cup the lower left tip of the onigiri. It should look like the photo on the right.
Voila! Now you can enjoy your clean, COVID19-free onigiri that was not contaminated by your dirty hands and fingers.
I hope you all are as mind blown as me.
